Principal Specialist, Engineering and ETL (OT) | Ma’aden

Role Overview 

As the Principal Specialist for Engineering and ETL (OT), you will provide enterprise-level leadership for Ma’aden’s Operational Technology data landscape. This is a high-impact role responsible for the reliable ingestion, transformation, and availability of operational data across our fully integrated mining value chain. You will define the scalable patterns that bridge the gap between industrial source systems (historians) and enterprise analytics platforms, ensuring that data products are delivered with high quality, secure lineage, and the specific latency requirements needed for world-class mining operations.

Key Accountabilities

1. OT Data Standards & Architecture

• Reference Architectures: Define enterprise-wide ETL standards and patterns for batch, streaming, and near-real-time OT data ingestion.

• Normalization Patterns: Establish standardized ingestion patterns for historians and OT source systems, including unit standardization, quality flags, and complex tag mapping.

• Site Onboarding: Provide architectural oversight for onboarding new mining sites, ensuring consistent delivery standards despite site-specific technical variability.

2. Pipeline Engineering & Reliability

• Robust Design: Design and assure pipeline reliability, specifically handling idempotency, backfill strategies, late-arriving data, and automated reconciliation.

• Transformation Logic: Oversee the transformation logic required to produce curated OT data products that align with enterprise governance and metadata requirements.

• Performance Tuning: Drive continuous improvement through observability, cost optimization, and performance tuning of high-volume OT workloads.

3. Security, Governance & Assurance

• Cybersecurity Alignment: Partner with OT Cyber and Platform Security teams to ensure all data pipelines comply with network segmentation and “governance-by-design” requirements.

• Quality Gates: Act as the final technical authority for internal and vendor deliverables, providing technical direction and rigorous quality gates for complex engineering initiatives.

• Auditability: Ensure every OT-to-IT pipeline is built with embedded lineage, auditability, and data quality checks.

About You: Skills & Qualifications

• Professional Experience:

  • 10–15 years of experience in data engineering/ETL.

  • Demonstrated exposure to OT/industrial data environments and large-scale historian systems.

  • Proven track record of delivering analytics-ready OT datasets at an enterprise scale.

• Technical Mastery:

  • Time-Series Expertise: Deep knowledge of time-series data characteristics and the unique challenges of industrial data ingestion.

  • Pipeline Engineering: Advanced skills in orchestration, observability, and designing scalable, secure OT-to-IT pipelines.

  • Governance: Ability to implement data lineage and auditability frameworks within industrial contexts.

• Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

  • Master’s degree preferred; direct exposure to OT systems is a significant advantage.

• Core Competencies:

  • Stakeholder Leadership: Ability to navigate the intersection of plant operations, OT engineering, IT, and executive analytics consumers.

  • Vendor Assurance: Skilled in providing technical governance for complex, multi-site delivery programs.
