Senior Engineer, Platform Databases | First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB)

Role Overview 

As a Senior Engineer for Platform Databases, you will be a key guardian of FAB’s data integrity and availability. You will provide high-level technical expertise in managing complex Oracle environments across AIX and Linux platforms. This role is central to the bank’s mission-critical operations, requiring a specialist who can handle 24×7 high-availability clusters, large-scale migrations, and advanced security implementations like Transparent Data Encryption (TDE). You will sit at the intersection of infrastructure and application development, ensuring that our database services meet rigorous SLAs and performance targets.

Key Accountabilities

1. Infrastructure Management & High Availability

• Clustered Environments: Lead the installation, configuration, and proactive management of Oracle RAC and ASM. You are responsible for the health and upkeep of the clustered environment to ensure zero downtime.

• Disaster Recovery (DR): Implement and support local and cross-Data Center failovers using Oracle Data Guard (ODG) and Oracle Golden Gate (OGG). Participate in regular DR drills to guarantee business continuity.

• Patching & Upgrades: Manage the lifecycle of Oracle infrastructure, including critical patching in production RAC environments and upgrading clusters to the latest supported releases.

2. Database Security & Engineering

• Encryption (TDE): Implement and manage Transparent Data Encryption in highly critical, 24×7 environments to protect sensitive financial data.

• Physical Implementation: Execute the physical design of databases, storage structures, and replication solutions, ensuring they adhere to architectural policies.

• Automation: Write and maintain sophisticated OS-level shell scripts (or Perl/Python) to automate database administration tasks and application maintenance.

3. Performance, Capacity & Support

• Level 3 Troubleshooting: Act as the highest escalation point for complex L2 and L3 database issues, performing proactive and reactive performance tuning and root-cause analysis.

• Capacity Planning: Conduct regular trend analysis and predictive modeling for database growth, ensuring resource requirements are met before they impact performance.

• Application Support: Provide DBA support for both “off-the-shelf” and internally developed banking applications, participating in an on-call rotation to support mission-critical systems.

Must-Have Key Skills

1. Oracle RAC: Expertise in installation, configuration, and cluster maintenance.

2. Oracle ASM: Advanced administration and maintenance of Automatic Storage Management.

3. Upgrades & Patching: Proven ability to upgrade RAC clusters and databases to current supported versions.

4. High Availability: Mastery of Oracle Data Guard and Golden Gate replication topologies.

5. Security: Deep working knowledge of Oracle TDE (Encryption) technology.

About You: Skills & Qualifications

• Experience: * 9+ years of hands-on experience with Oracle databases (versions 11g through current releases).

  • Mid-to-senior level experience in a large-scale, complex organization (Financial Institution experience is highly preferred).

• Technical Mastery:

  • Strong Unix platform skills (AIX/Linux) and a solid understanding of networking, tiered application environments, and storage.

  • Proficiency in PL/SQL (procedures, functions, and packages) and Shell scripting.

  • Experience managing complex replication topologies via Oracle Golden Gate.

• Education & Certification: * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology.

  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) is highly ideal.

• Leadership: Ability to lead a technical team of DBAs through complex migration and consolidation projects.
