Assistant Manager – Financial Accounting
Job Purpose
As the Assistant Manager of Financial Accounting, you will drive value for the organization and its stakeholders by developing technically sound accounting strategies. You will play a critical role in Group Financial Reporting, ensuring all internal and external requirements are met with precision. This role balances day-to-day operational leadership with the high-level research needed to navigate evolving financial standards.
Key Responsibilities
-
Month-End Leadership: Coordinate and finalize monthly accounts, including the approval of journal entries and the strategic determination of expense provisions.
-
Financial Intelligence: Conduct deep-dive variance and trend analysis (including MOM validation), presenting actionable findings to senior leadership.
-
Compliance & GL Management: Continuously monitor the General Ledger to ensure total alignment with SLFRS/LKAS standards while managing team deadlines and responsibilities.
-
Complex Accounting: Manage and post entries for specialized areas such as annual maintenance, frequency and transponder fees, gratuity, and professional overheads.
-
Audit & Statutory Reporting: Lead the preparation of quarterly and annual statutory financial statements. Serve as the primary liaison for auditors, resolving discrepancies and finalizing management letters.
-
Operational Excellence: Oversee balance sheet clearing exercises, improve provisioning processes, and draft technical accounting papers on new financial implications.
-
People Management: Lead and motivate a high-performing team, conducting performance reviews and ensuring the accuracy of bank and intercompany reconciliations.
-
Business Strategy Support: Support tax teams during Inland Revenue hearings, provide financial data for cost-reduction strategies, and analyze intercompany allocations to support expansion.
Requirements (The Person)
-
Professional Qualification: Partially or Fully Qualified in CASL, ACCA, or CIMA.
-
Education: A degree in Finance or Accountancy from a well-reputed university.
-
Experience: 5–6 years of experience in the audit or mercantile sector.
-
The “Big 4” Edge: Prior experience at a Big 4 audit firm (PwC, EY, KPMG, Deloitte) is highly advantageous.
-
Technical Mastery: Strong knowledge of Sri Lanka Accounting Standards (SLFRS/LKAS) and experience in complex group reporting environments.
Strategic Tips for this Application:
-
Highlight “Big 4” Training: If you have Big 4 experience, lead with it. These companies value the “audit rigour” and professional skepticism learned at those firms.
-
Focus on SLFRS 16 & 15: Since this is likely a Telco role, your understanding of SLFRS 16 (Leases) and SLFRS 15 (Revenue from Contracts) is vital. Mention your experience applying these specific standards.
-
Showcase “Audit Resolution”: The JD mentions “resolving differences between management and auditors.” In your CV or interview, provide an example of a time you successfully defended an accounting treatment or resolved an audit query.
-
The “Navigator” Report: The mention of “Navigator reports” suggests a specific internal reporting framework. Emphasize your ability to produce high-level management information (MI) packs that go beyond just the numbers.
