Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) | AI-Enhanced NOS

Role Overview

On behalf of a confidential client, Charterhouse is seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join a high-stakes, greenfield project: building a next-generation, AI-enhanced Network Operating System (NOS) from the ground up. We are looking for either a Principal SDET to architect the overarching global test strategy or a Senior SDET to build out the scalable automation frameworks that will validate the world’s future network infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

1. Test Architecture & Strategy

Greenfield Validation: Architect testing systems designed to validate microsecond-level packet processing and network-wide protocol convergence without the burden of legacy code.
Strategic Leadership (Principal Level): Work directly with the CTO to define the quality roadmap, establishing scalable processes that treat testing as a first-class engineering discipline.
Network Simulation: Design and build complex, production-grade simulations to test system limits, utilizing tools like GNS3, EVE-NG, or custom-built frameworks.

2. Automation & Protocol Testing

Scalable Frameworks: Develop and maintain automated testing systems in Python (Pytest/Nose) that are clean, extensible, and capable of keeping pace with rapid NOS development.
Protocol Verification: Write and execute rigorous tests to ensure protocols like BGP, OSPF, and MPLS meet industry standards and perform reliably under massive data flows.
CI/CD Integration: Own the integration of automated quality checks within the CI/CD pipeline to identify and resolve regressions before they reach production.

3. Systems Engineering & Debugging

OS-Level Debugging: Perform deep-system debugging within Linux environments, containers, and virtualized stacks to identify root causes of distributed system failures.
Performance & Stress Testing: Conduct large-scale stress tests to ensure the NOS remains stable under extreme pressure and complex deployment scenarios.
Collaborative Engineering: Work side-by-side with developers to build quality checks directly into new features during the design phase.

About You: Skills & Competencies

Python Expert: Exceptional programming skills with a focus on writing maintainable, high-quality test code.
Networking Specialist: A solid grasp of networking fundamentals and experience validating routing protocols in high-acuity environments.
Tenacious Debugger: A relentless approach to troubleshooting complex system interactions and distributed environment failures.
Tools & Infrastructure: Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Ansible/Terraform) and modern virtualization technologies.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience (Principal): A minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in testing or quality engineering, with a proven track record in large-scale, distributed systems.
Experience (Senior): Strong background in backend automation with a focus on B2C or infrastructure products.
Technical Stack: Proficiency in Linux, Containers (Docker/K8s), and Virtualization.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are essential for cross-functional collaboration.
Differentiators: Contributions to open-source testing frameworks or experience building quality-focused engineering cultures from scratch.
