LabOps Engineer | Tech Innovation Company
Role Overview
Charterhouse is partnering with a pioneering Tech Innovation Company to appoint a LabOps Engineer to its engineering operations team. This role is a critical link in the development lifecycle of next-generation network operating systems (NOS). You will be responsible for the physical and digital heartbeat of the lab, managing a growing fleet of high-performance network switches across on-premises and co-location sites. This is an ideal opportunity for a hands-on engineer who enjoys the intersection of physical hardware management, network administration, and modern automation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hardware & Infrastructure Management
-
Physical Deployment: Lead the hands-on setup, cabling, and powering of lab hardware, ensuring all equipment is racked and configured according to engineering standards.
-
Firmware & Testing: Install firmware and test images on various devices, performing essential functional checks to ensure “devices under test” are ready for the engineering teams.
-
Environment Oversight: Maintain and upgrade core lab infrastructure, including patch panels, management switches, console servers (e.g., Opengear), KVMs, and DHCP/DNS services.
-
Facilities Monitoring: Monitor critical environmental factors including power distribution, cooling efficiency, and rack space to ensure 24/7 operational reliability.
2. Documentation & Logistics
-
Asset Tracking: Maintain meticulous asset inventories and port maps, ensuring every piece of hardware is accounted for and easily accessible.
-
Technical Mapping: Create and update detailed cabling diagrams and network topology maps to assist engineering teams in navigating the lab environment.
-
Vendor & RMA Management: Act as the primary point of contact for equipment logistics, managing RMAs and coordinating with external vendors for repairs and procurement.
3. Automation & Workflow Optimization
-
Process Automation: Streamline lab workflows by applying automation tools such as Python, Ansible, and NetBox (IPAM) to improve deployment consistency.
-
Access Coordination: Manage lab access and equipment scheduling across multicultural engineering teams to prevent resource conflicts.
-
Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement tooling or process enhancements that reduce manual intervention and improve the overall reliability of the lab.
About You: Skills & Competencies
-
Hands-on Expertise: Proven experience with network hardware maintenance, including cabling standards and power management.
-
Linux Proficiency: Comfortable using Linux for scripting, remote device management, and basic troubleshooting.
-
Attention to Detail: A disciplined approach to documentation and a commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
-
Collaborative Spirit: Excellent coordination skills with the ability to work effectively within a diverse, fast-paced engineering culture.
Qualifications & Experience
-
Technical Knowledge: A solid understanding of Ethernet/IP networking and serial console access.
-
Automation Toolkit: Familiarity with NetBox, Ansible, or Python is highly desirable.
-
Tools: Experience with remote management solutions (Opengear, KVM-over-IP) and exposure to CI/CD frameworks.
-
Certifications: Relevant credentials such as CompTIA Network+, Linux+, or vendor-specific certifications (Cisco/Juniper) are an advantage.
-
Communication: Exceptional verbal and written English communication skills are essential.
Why Join This Innovation Team?
Working within this forward-thinking engineering division offers:
-
Greenfield Exposure: Support the testing of an entirely new Network Operating System free from legacy constraints.
-
Multicultural Environment: Collaborate with a global team of experts in a culture that values diversity and technical curiosity.
-
Career Evolution: A platform to grow from physical lab management into advanced Lab-as-a-Service (LaaS) and DevSecOps automation.
